The first Summerville High School Soccer team to win the AAAA South Carolina State Soccer Championship celebrated their win with a 40th year anniversary reunion at “Linwood” on February 24, 2024.

It was exactly 40 years to the day after defeating Eastside who entered the game 17-0. Coached by Frank Riddlehover, they were the defending AAAA Men’s Soccer Champions and on a 24-game winning streak. The game was close and Summerville led in shots on goal 6-4 at halftime. In the 57th minute, Summerville was awarded a free kick from 35 years out. Matthew Shelbourne launched a beautiful ball inside the six yard box. Their keeper tried to push it over the crossbar but only got a slight touch. The ball fell to Magnus Kaiser who promptly scored into the roof of the net. The keeper had no chance. Shortly after that, one of the Eastside players pushed one of the Summerville players down and was immediately red-carded. In the confrontation that followed, one more Eastside player and Ronnie Murray were re-carded. Summerville finished with ten men and Eastside with nine.
“We decided to protect our lead and only attack if opportunities were golden. No real threats came after the cards, although Jack Curtin made a couple stellar saves in the first half,” agreed the co-coaches, Anthony Pelton, Ron Brady and Dave Hightower. Green Wave won 1-0. Both teams finished 17-1. Congratulations to all those players, coaches and participants!
