AAAA State Soccer Championship Reunion at Linwood

AAAA State Soccer Championship Reunion at Linwood

The first Summerville High School Soccer team to win the AAAA South Carolina State Soccer Championship celebrated their win with a 40th year anniversary reunion at “Linwood” on February 24, 2024.

It was exactly 40 years to the day after defeating Eastside who entered the game 17-0. Coached by Frank Riddlehover, they were the defending AAAA Men’s Soccer Champions and on a 24-game winning streak. The game was close and Summerville led in shots on goal 6-4 at halftime. In the 57th minute, Summerville was awarded a free kick from 35 years out. Matthew Shelbourne launched a beautiful ball inside the six yard box. Their keeper tried to push it over the crossbar but only got a slight touch. The ball fell to Magnus Kaiser who promptly scored into the roof of the net. The keeper had no chance. Shortly after that, one of the Eastside players pushed one of the Summerville players down and was immediately red-carded. In the confrontation that followed, one more Eastside player and Ronnie Murray were re-carded. Summerville finished with ten men and Eastside with nine.
“We decided to protect our lead and only attack if opportunities were golden. No real threats came after the cards, although Jack Curtin made a couple stellar saves in the first half,” agreed the co-coaches, Anthony Pelton, Ron Brady and Dave Hightower. Green Wave won 1-0. Both teams finished 17-1. Congratulations to all those players, coaches and participants!

Flowertown Amongst the Pines

Flowertown Amongst the Pines

“Flowertown Amongst the Pines”, the name aptly given to the quaint town of Summerville, SC. “Amongst the Pines”, the treasured Loblolly and the Longleaf Pine stretch their magnificent, textured trunks often 100 feet into the clear blue sky.

You know it’s summer in Summerville because throughout this charming, historic town the Crape Myrtles have burst into bloom! Dazzling us with their strikingly enormous clusters of pink, red, lavender or white blossoms. Their heavy, flower laden branches ofttimes bend into fragrant and enchanting archways at Linwood. And the common Myrtle, a completely different plant, creeps green at our feet with small, starlike flowers in the spring.

“Instead of the thorn bush the Pine Tree will grow and instead of the briers the Myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign which will not be destroyed.”  (Isaiah 55:13)

Wedding Bells at Linwood

Wedding Bells at Linwood

While they didn’t sail up the Ashley River, the Navy arrived in Summerville from Annapolis resplendent in summer dress uniform to witness and celebrate the marriage of Ensigns Sophie Shelbourne and Dylan Black. And, do they know how to celebrate?!

After passing through the “Sword Arch” upon leaving the church, Mr. and Mrs. Black received family and friends at a reception in the beautiful, subtropical, Linwood gardens. Sophie grew up playing in the gardens, the home of her grandparents.

Note: The “Arch of Swords”, originally an old English and American but now a worldwide tradition shows a symbolic pledge of loyalty to the newly married couple from their Military family. Many brides are worried that the equally symbolic spank by the final swordsman doesn’t tear her dress!

The Linwood Palmettos

The Linwood Palmettos

Today 28 stately Palmetto trees at Linwood are being stripped of their beautiful, billowing, pale yellow flowers turned to weighty branches of seeds but remaining a vision to behold if not taken for granted by the average South Carolinian. The Palmetto, Cabbage Palmetto, or Sabal Palm is ubiquitous in the southern United States. Purportedly the sweet/bitter fruit is edible but enjoyed mostly by wildlife.

The incredible spongy consistency of their trunks repelled the British cannonballs at Fort Moultrie in 1776 on Sullivans Island helping the Patriots win the first Naval battle of the Revolutionary War therefore earning the Palmettos’ place on the South Carolina state flag.

Linwood welcomed Nicole Pridgen as manager over the cottage rentals in early 2023. Nicole has lived in South Carolina for 36 years and her love for the Lowcountry and Southern hospitality runs deep. You’ll see her with a smile on her face as she runs from cottage to cottage making sure each is ready for you as our special guests. Nicole lives in Summerville with her husband and four children. When she’s not at Linwood, she’s usually teaching barre fitness classes at Barre Nation, chasing children or playing on the beach. She loves to devour a good book, especially reading to her children at bedtime.

When asked what she loves most about Linwood she smiled and answered, “As soon as you arrive on the property, you know you’ve arrived somewhere special! From the beautiful gardens to the adorable cottages, there is something so tranquil and relaxing about being at Linwood. It’s truly a little piece of heaven on Earth”.

We agree, Nicole! We are grateful to have someone with Nicole’s positivity and many years of experience in property management. Welcome to Linwood!
